On Monday, the New York Times reported that biologists Jennifer D. Calkins and Jennifer M. Gee have used the fundraising site Kickstarter to raise money to support their research. After learning of Calkins’ and Gee’s success, a couple of friends of mine commented that their campus development office would not be too pleased with an attempt to use a site like Kickstarter to raise money. I haven’t broached the topic with my own campus development office, but I’ve considered giving Kickstarter a try.
How about you? Have you ever tried raising research-oriented money (or teaching-oriented money, for that matter) through crowdsourcing, either via Kickstarter or some other venue? Have you ever considered it? If so, let us hear about it in this week’s open thread!
Each Wednesday, ProfHacker hosts an open thread discussion. Sometimes a specific topic is announced, and sometimes the discussion is completely open. Please remember to abide by our commenting and community guidelines. Thanks!
