This week’s Weekend Reading kicks off with a particular point of pride for me. On Tuesday, Converse College announced a “Tuition Reset” for Fall 2014, which will reduce tuition price by 43%. I have been proud to be a part of the Converse community since I joined its faculty in 2007, but this week has taken that distinction to a new level.
On Tuesday, Apple announced two new iPhones, which will be available on September 20th. This article from Dumb Little Man not only gives an overview of the two new iPhones, but also compares many of the other smartphone options, including the Galaxy S4, HTC One, and Nokia Lumina, for users who may be thinking of an upgrade.
Looking ahead in contemporary fiction, next week Thomas Pynchon’s latest novel, Bleeding Edge, hits the bookstores. Jonathan Lethem’s review is up in the New York Times Sunday Review of Books.
If you have read Jon Krakauer’s Into the Wild or seen the film, which was based on the book, you might be interested in reading “How Chris McCandless died” from The New Yorker. In his book, Krakauer speculated that McCandless had accidentally poisoned himself by eating the seeds of Hedysarum alpinum, a toxic plant native to the Alaskan wilderness. Without giving anything away, The New Yorker article offers new evidence and a different conclusion.
