It’s been a difficult week to be in South Carolina between the unseasonably hot weather (it’s the South; we are used to hot summers, but not this hot this soon) and the horrible events in Charleston. June 19th is also know as Juneteenth, as many of you already are aware. TalkingPointsMemo has posted “The Hidden History of Juneteenth.” Writing for the The NY Times, Kenneth Davishas proclaimed, “Juneteenth is for everyone.” In light of this week’s brutality, the holiday, which celebrates the end of slavery in the United States, seems like both an important milestone and also an indictment, particularly of South Carolina, which still flies the Confederate flag in the state capital of Columbia. #TakeItDown, the movement to have this mark of our “heritage” removed is not a new idea. Indeed, there are many residents of the state that have wanted the “Stars and Bars” taken down for years. There are now several petitions circulating aimed at the removal of the flag--some from the SC state capital in particular and others for its removal from all government buildings. Mic details the circulation of one such petition, which already has garnered almost 90K signatures as I write this sentence. Here’s a link to the petition (MoveOn.Org).
In happier news, all the time that you (and by “you,” I mean “me”) have spent watching cat videos online has not been for naught. On the contrary, according to a recent study, watching cat videos might actually be beneficial.
