Happy Halloween ProfHackers! We hope that your day is full of treats and light on tricks.
For your weekend reading:
Apparently, Craigslist is not just for hook-ups and used furniture anymore. The Atlantic reports that people are also using it to list cemetery plots: “Shopping for Secondhand Graves on Craigslist.” While we are on the topic of burial, NPR ran an interview with mortician Caitlyn Doughty, author of Smoke Gets in Your Eyes and Other Lessons from the Crematory, a couple weeks ago. In her book (and in the interview), Doughty discusses a number of end-of-life issues that she argues need to be confronted.
If, like me, you ran out of time (again) and can’t face the mobs of people at your local Halloween Costume tent sale of choice, Salon author Lindsay Abrams might make you feel slightly better: “Halloween: America’s No. 1 holiday for wasting money on garbage.” If however, you are really excited about your costume (or your dog’s costume), you might save her article for next week. If you are still looking for costume ideas, you might check out this infographic of the Most Popular Costumes of the Last Five Years. Or maybe you prefer Delicious Women’s PhD Darling Sexy Costume, because nothing says “Ph.D.” like a plunging neckline and micro-mini w/ mortarboard. At least the reviews for this costume are worth reading. Finally, apparently Elsa will need to be added to the infographic next year because it sounds like she’s the costume to wear this year: “Elsa or Else”
If you need an excuse to raid the candy basket this evening (or pick up some half-priced leftovers at the store tomorrow), “Chocolate is good for your brain” (it helps ward off Alzheimers, according to this article from Scientific American, which also ran in Salon.
On a related note, “What if your favorite book were Halloween candy?”
And if you are looking for more treats, Lifehacker has rounded up “All of the Halloween Deals and Freebies you can get today” including Chipotle, Petco, Jamba Juice, and more. Be aware: most of these require some evidence of your Halloween spirit.
Our video of the week features Daniel Radcliffe rapping Blackalicious’s “Alphabet Aerobics” on the Jimmy Fallon show:
