3 Alarming Statistics in a National Report on Campus Sexual Assaults

Sen. Claire McCaskill, a Democrat of Missouri, released on Wednesday the results of a national survey on colleges’ handling of cases of sexual assault. Three findings stood out:

1. Of the surveyed institutions, 41 percent said they had not conducted any investigations into sexual assault during the preceding five years.
2. Of the same group, 22 percent said they had given their athletics departments oversight of sexual-assault cases involving athletes.
3. And 43 percent of surveyed institutions said they were under federal investigation for noncompliance with Clery Act requirements for handling sexual violence.
