Academy of Arts and Sciences Defends a President Accused of Résumé Inflation

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences is standing behind its president, Leslie Cohen Berlowitz, amid accusations that she falsely claimed on grant proposals to have a doctorate, The New York Times reported. The statements of support, from a spokesman for the 233-year-old scholarly society and the chairman of its executive board, followed a report by The Boston Globe indicating that at least two grant applications to the National Endowment for the Humanities over the past decade had falsely claimed that Ms. Berlowitz received a doctoral degree from New York University. A spokesman for the university confirmed that Ms. Berlowitz had been enrolled in a Ph.D. program at NYU from 1967 to 1978 but said the university had no record of her having received a doctorate.
