Accreditor Takes U. of Phoenix Off Notice 2 Years After Concerns Were Raised

The University of Phoenix’s accrediting agency has removed the institution from the “notice” status it imposed two years ago over concerns about the for-profit giant’s governance structure. The university’s parent company, the Apollo Education Group, made the disclosure in a corporate filing on Thursday.

While the Higher Learning Commission renewed the university’s accreditation for another 10 years in 2013, it put the university on notice for a two-year period, citing concerns about its independence from Apollo and its assessment of students, among other issues.

“We are appreciative of the work done by the HLC staff and the independent peer-review team made up of professionals in higher education, and their recognition of the efforts undertaken by everyone at University of Phoenix to satisfactorily resolve all concerns identified in 2013,” the university’s president, Timothy P. Slottow, wrote in an email to faculty and staff members.
