The National Collegiate Athletic Association announced on Monday that it was moving seven previously scheduled championship events out of North Carolina “because of the cumulative actions taken by the state concerning civil rights protections.”
North Carolina has been accused of discriminating against transgender people with the passage of House Bill 2, which requires that people use public bathrooms that correspond with the sex listed on their birth certificates. The University of North Carolina system president, Margaret Spellings, said in May that the insititution would not enforce HB2. That has not slowed cultural and sports boycotts against the state.
The NCAA’s Board of Governors had decided to act because of the association’s “commitment to fairness and inclusion.”
Following are the events that will be relocated from North Carolina in 2016-17:
2016 Division I Women’s Soccer Championship, College Cup
2016 Division III Men’s and Women’s Soccer Championships
2017 Division I Men’s Basketball Championship, first and second rounds
2017 Division I Women’s Golf Championships, regional
2017 Division III Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships
2017 Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship
2017 Division II Baseball Championship
The NCAA will determine the new locations for the relocated championships soon, said Mark Emmert, president of the association.
