CUNY Faculty Votes No Confidence in Curriculum Overhaul

A majority of faculty members at the City University of New York has voted no confidence in Pathways, a systemwide overhaul of the curriculum. Some 3,996 full-time faculty members voted to support a statement of no confidence, with only 323 voting against, in a referendum that culminated months of controversy. The faculty statement said the proposed leaner core curriculum would gut education standards at CUNY. “Our students deserve an education that is broad, deep, and rigorous—but Pathways undermines these goals,” said Alex Vitale, a professor of sociology at Brooklyn College, in a news release. “The level of faculty opposition to Pathways is unprecedented because our students’ futures are at stake. It is our professional duty to uphold the quality of the CUNY curriculum.”
