Education Management Corp. Lays Off 200 and Sells a Building

The Education Management Corporation has disclosed the layoffs of about 200 employees nationwide and the sale of its Art Institute of Pittsburgh building, in the latest round of cuts to affect the for-profit higher-education company, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported.

EDMC, which is one of several higher-education companies facing heightened scrutiny from Congress and state regulators, said many of the layoffs had taken place at its Art Institute locations.

“This action is part of our efforts to offer students a great learning experience and keep it affordable,” said Chris Hardman, a company spokesman. “We have to maintain a close alignment between resources and market demand. So we had to make the difficult decision to lay off people at the Art Institutes and the other locations.”
