Emory’s Provost Is Named Its Next President

Emory University’s provost will be its next president, the Board of Trustees announced on Friday.

Claire E. Sterk, who is also executive vice president for academic affairs, will be the Georgia university’s 20th president. Ms. Sterk started at Emory in 1995 as a faculty member in the Rollins School of Public Health.

Her new role follows a year of change for the university and its hospital system.

Last year Emory’s president, James W. Wagner, considered ditching the hospital system because it consumed too many board conversations and made up about 70 percent of the university’s overall budget. Mr. Wagner has announced plans to step down in August.

The smaller parts of the hospital system were sold off, and Emory’s health divisions mostly kept learning at the center of their missions.

Emory also recently established working groups to address students’ diversity concerns after the Black Students of Emory issued a list of demands last fall.

Correction (6/3/2016, 3:50 p.m.): An earlier version of this post said that Emory’s hospital system had been mostly sold off. The sale actually involved only a smaller portion of the system. The text has been updated accordingly.
