Faculty Salaries at Community Colleges Rise 2%

Summary: The median base pay for full-time faculty members at community and technical colleges rose 2 percent in 2013-14. The data reflect the salaries of 26,341 faculty members at 213 institutions.

Findings:

• Faculty members at institutions with unions saw their pay increase slightly more than did their nonunion counterparts. Their median base salary rose 2.1 percent, compared with 1.9 percent.
• The median average salary for all institutions was $59,705 for a nine-to-10-month contract.
• The disciplines with the lowest average pay were precision production, transportation and materials moving, and science technologies. The disciplines with the highest average pay were ethnic, cultural, gender, and group studies; architecture and related services; and legal-support services.
• Department heads were paid the most in family and consumer sciences, architecture and related services, and engineering-related fields. They were paid the least in developmental education, agriculture, and precision production.
• About 60 percent of department heads, on average, received salary supplements. The median value of that supplement was almost $6,000.
• Departments of English language and literature employed the most adjuncts, on average, at 53. The median average pay per credit hour for adjuncts was $858.

Bottom Line: Median base pay for faculty members at two-year colleges increased in 2013-14 at a rate that outpaced inflation.
