Federal Office to Investigate Title IX Complaint Against UConn

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights will investigate a complaint filed against the University of Connecticut by a group of current and former students who accused the institution of failing to protect them from sexual assault.

An official with the federal office wrote this month to UConn’s president, Susan Herbst, that the decision to investigate the complaint “in no way implies that OCR has made a determination with regard to its merits.”

Some of the women who filed the complaint against the university have also filed a federal lawsuit over UConn’s handling of sex-assault cases.

UConn General Counsel Richard Orr said in a statement that the university “expected and welcomes this review by OCR. We look forward to working with their staff as they examine the policies and practices that UConn employs to prevent sexual assault and discrimination, to educate our community on these important issues, and to provide victims with the resources they need.”
