For-Profit Colleges Seek to Overturn Judge’s Decision on 2 Federal Rules

The Association of Private Sector Colleges and Universities, the chief trade group of for-profit colleges, said today that it had appealed last week’s court ruling to uphold a pair of Education Department regulations barring deception in college recruiting and commissions for college recruiters. The ruling, by Judge Rosemary M. Collyer of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, struck down a separate rule that would require a college with online programs to seek approval from each state in which it had students, a provision that was equally controversial among other sectors of higher education. The association sued the department in January over the regulations, and filed its appeal on Friday with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
