Former Band Member Gets Prison Time in Florida A&M Hazing Death

A former band member at Florida A&M University has been sentenced to 77 months in prison for his role in the 2011 death of the drum major Robert Champion, the Associated Press reports. Dante Martin, who was convicted in October of manslaughter and felony hazing, is the first of 15 former band members charged to receive prison time.

Prosecutors called Mr. Martin the ringleader of the ritual that killed Mr. Champion, whose death brought national attention to the band’s hazing culture and resulted in the departure of its director and the resignation of the university’s president.
