Franklin Pierce U. Shuts Down 6 Academic Programs

Franklin Pierce University said on Wednesday that it would close six academic programs, The Keene Sentinel reported.

The New Hampshire university will no longer offer degrees in American studies, arts management, fine arts, graphic communications, mathematics, and theater and dance. Current students in those fields will be allowed until May 2016 to complete their degrees. Full-time faculty members in the affected departments will be reassigned to other areas.

A university spokeswoman, Lisa Murray, said she did not know how many students and members of the faculty and staff would be affected, or how many courses would be eliminated.

Administrators said the decision was made to allow the university to focus resources on programs that “attract, retain and prepare students for the personal and professional futures that await them,” according to the email.

Birge said in December that the university’s senior administration was in the process of evaluating all majors to help the university overcome challenges that small, private liberal arts colleges are facing, including limited financial resources and strong competition for students.
