Lecturer Says Rutgers Police Put Him Through a Psychiatric Evaluation Over Tweets

Rutgers University responded to a student’s complaint about social-media posts by Kevin Allred, a part-time lecturer, on Tuesday, a university spokesman said.

“The Rutgers University Police Department responded to a complaint from a student and took all appropriate action,” wrote E.J. Miranda, a Rutgers spokesman, in an emailed statement.

In a series of tweets on Tuesday night, Mr. Allred said that New York police officers had taken him into custody that day because Rutgers police wanted him to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. He said that the evaluation was based on his tweets and that it was “proof positive that Trump’s crackdown on free speech has absolutely begun.”

Mr. Allred said that his tweets asking rhetorical questions about the Second Amendment were “labeled threats.” He has not responded to a request for comment.

Correction (11/16/2016, 2:54 p.m.): A previous version of this post incorrectly stated that Mr. Allred was a grad student. He is a part-time lecturer, according to the university’s directory.
