Howard U. Fires Police Officers After Hospital Patient Was Dumped From Wheelchair

Howard University has fired two police officers after video appeared to show them dumping a female patient from the university’s hospital out of a wheelchair last month, and leaving her lying on the ground by a bus stop outside, according to The Washington Post.

Gabriel Adegoke, president of the Metropolitan Campus Police Officers Union, which represents the officers, confirmed to the Post that the female officer shown in the video, one of the male officers, and their supervisor had been fired. A second male officer in the video was not terminated, Mr. Adegoke told the Post.

The unnamed female patient had become agitated and had refused treatment while at the hospital, according to Mr. Adegoke, and the officers tried to calm her and escort her out of the hospital. The patient had been brought to the hospital by ambulance, but was ultimately left with neither hospital personnel nor the wheelchair after the officers abandoned her by the bus stop.

A Howard University spokeswoman did not return a request for comment from the Post.
