Judge Dismisses Claim That UC-Berkeley Fostered Anti-Semitism

A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit against the University of California at Berkeley that accused it of fostering anti-Semitism by not doing enough to curb alleged harassment during pro-Palestinian protests, the Associated Press reports.

The lawsuit, filed by two students, argued that the university failed to deal with complaints of “campus terrorist incitements” by two student groups, the Muslim Students Union and Students for Justice in Palestine.

It accused the university of failing to provide one of the plaintiffs with adequate protection against anti-Semitic violence in a March 2010 incident in which a student involved with Students for Justice in Palestine “intentionally rammed” a shopping cart into her on the campus.

Much of the alleged harassment constituted protected political speech, Judge Richard Seeborg, of the U.S. District Court in San Francisco, wrote in dismissing the case on December 22.
