Kennesaw State Responds to Video of Adviser Threatening to Call Police on Black Student

By  Andy Thomason
May 14, 2015

[Updated (5/14/2015, 2:21 p.m.) with a statement from the university.]

Kennesaw State University was embroiled in controversy on Thursday after a student uploaded a video to Twitter that appeared to show an adviser at the college telling the student, who is black, that waiting for an adviser to see him amounted to “harassment,” and threatening to call the campus police. The video was uploaded by a student named Kevin Bruce around 9 p.m. on Wednesday, and subsequently passed around by many others:

The student’s video had been retweeted more than 4,000 times as of Thursday morning, and the hashtag #ItsBiggerThanKSU had emerged as a rallying cry alleging racism at the Georgia college and elsewhere.

In a brief statement Thursday afternoon, the college said officials were reviewing the concerns of a male student “regarding the behavior of an academic adviser” in the university’s WellStar College of Health and Human Services. “Kennesaw State University officials take seriously all student concerns and are dedicated to promoting a positive academic-advising experience for all students,” the statement continued.

The college, which held its commencement ceremony on Thursday, first acknowledged the controversy in a tweet around 10 a.m.:

We are aware of the video and situation. Thanks for sharing your concern with us. A formal complaint process has begun.
