Richard W. Lariviere’s contract as the University of Oregon’s president will not be renewed by the State Board of Higher Education in June, the Associated Press reports. Mr. Lariviere, who has clashed with the board over a controversial plan to split the flagship from the system and has dealt with a string of sports-related scandals, sent an e-mail to students and faculty members on Tuesday saying he would be forced to resign or face termination.
Phil Knight, the Nike co-founder who is a longtime major donor to the university, sharply criticized the decision. “It deeply saddens me that some people in power in our state continue to drive Oregon into a death spiral with their embrace of mediocrity,” said Mr. Knight, according to The Oregonian. He said this “astonishingly bad decision” was “yet another application of Oregon’s assisted-suicide law.”
