Law Dean at U. of Wyoming Resigns, Citing a Lack of Communication

Stephen D. Easton resigned on Thursday as dean of the University of Wyoming’s College of Law, asserting that important decisions about the law school had been made without meaningful consultation with him or his faculty members. Mr. Easton will continue to serve as a faculty member.

Robert J. Sternberg, the university’s president and an occasional contributor to The Chronicle, this week began seeking nominations for an advisory panel to evaluate the law school and the institution’s service to the state in areas such as energy, natural resources, water, and environmental law, the university said in a news release. Mr. Easton cited the panel as a specific concern in his resignation, which the university said would be effective on November 15.

Sternberg told the Star-Tribune Thursday he asked Easton to reconsider his resignation.

“I asked him to reconsider several times,” Sternberg said. “I really do think it’s important for all units to get feedback on how they can do better.”

The university will soon appoint an interim dean to fill Easton’s open position, according to a university release. Easton has served as dean of the university’s College of Law since 2009.
