Susan Hockfield, who was named the first female president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2004, will step down once a new leader is chosen, the institute announced on Thursday. Explaining her decision, Ms. Hockfield said a new president would be better suited to see through a major fund-raising campaign that MIT is planning to start.
