Mizzou’s Interim Chief Condemns Suspended Professor’s Behavior in Second Video

A video showing a University of Missouri professor in an altercation with the police has brought renewed criticism of the suspended professor, including from the Columbia campus’s interim chancellor, Henry C. (Hank) Foley. “Her conduct and behavior are appalling,” Mr. Foley said of Melissa A. Click in a written statement, “and I am not only disappointed, I am angry, that a member of our faculty acted this way.”

He was referring to body-camera footage, first obtained by The Columbia Missourian, that shows Ms. Click confronting police officers and cursing. The video was shot last fall at a protest during which members of a protest group, Concerned Student 1950, surrounded the car of the system’s president at the time, Timothy M. Wolfe.

Ms. Click has apologized for her behavior in the video. “I am sorry I cursed at a police officer while trying to keep the peace during the students’ demonstrations at the Homecoming parade,” Ms. Click said in a statement to The Kansas City Star through the reputation-management firm Status Labs.

Ms. Click first drew nationwide scorn for attempting to remove a student journalist from another protest last year. The Missouri system’s Board of Curators suspended her after she was charged with misdemeanor assault. She later reached a deal with prosecutors to avoid prosecution. The American Association of University Professors has asked the board to reinstate Ms. Click, while Republican lawmakers in Missouri have called on the university to fire her.
