President Obama issued an executive order last week that established an effort to improve educational opportunities for American Indians and Alaska Natives, as well as to enhance tribal colleges. Among the tasks of the White House Initiative on American Indian and Alaska Native Education, the Departments of Education and of the Interior will collaborate on delivering grants to tribal elementary, secondary, and higher education. The effort, to be led by the secretary of education and the secretary of the interior, will also develop a national network of organizations to promote ideal education methods for American Indian and Alaska Native education.
