Adjunct professors and visiting professors at Siena College voted on Wednesday to unionize with the Service Employees International Union, the union said in a news release. Adjuncts at the New York college voted 86 to 27 in favor of unionizing, and visiting professors voted 16 to 5.
Siena is the latest in a handful of New York colleges where adjuncts have opted to join the SEIU’s Adjunct Action campaign, which seeks to organize part-time professors across the country. Adjunct professors at the College of Saint Rose, Ithaca College, and Schenectady County Community College have also voted to unionize.
Steve Janack, a spokesman for Siena, said in a statement to Capital New York that the college was “committed to an open and productive dialogue with SEIU to meet the needs of our adjunct and visiting faculty members while continuing to serve the best interests of our students.”
