Penn State Police Receive Threat Against Stadium, but Game Goes On

As tens of thousands of fans prepared to attend a home football game at Pennsylvania State University on Saturday, university officials issued an unusual warning: The campus police had learned of an anonymous threat against the stadium. After the police spent the morning sweeping the stadium for anything suspicious, they issued an “all clear” and allowed the game to be played as planned.

“Out of an abundance of caution we are notifying fans and the public of the threat that was received, so that they can make their own choices about personal safety and their attendance at today’s game,” David Gray, senior vice president for finance and business, said in a written statement. Further details about the threat were not provided.

The university had already heightened security at games this season, and now routinely inspects fans with metal-detecting wands, according to The Morning Call.

The university’s stadium is one of the largest in the country, with a capacity of more than 106,000. The game ended with Penn State defeating Minnesota in overtime, 29-26.
