Peter Ludlow, the philosophy professor at Northwestern University who has been accused of sexually harassing two students there, has resigned, according to a statement by the university.
Alan K. Cubbage, Northwestern’s vice president for university relations, said in the statement that Mr. Ludlow resigned on Monday, after the university started a process to fire him and while a faculty committee’s hearing in his case was still going on.

“Ludlow’s actions violated university policy and are an affront to the standards and expectations that Northwestern University has for its faculty members,” Mr. Cubbage said in the statement. “The university regrets the pain that was caused by his actions.”
Mr. Ludlow did not immediately respond to a message from The Chronicle seeking comment.
The professor’s relationship with a graduate student that culminated in the student’s filing a complaint with the institution — along with a second complaint filed by an undergraduate — became a flashpoint in the continuing debate about gender politics and sexual misconduct in higher education.
