Professor Is Awarded $2.2 Million in Discrimination Case Against William Paterson U.

A black education professor at William Paterson University of New Jersey has been awarded a total of more than $2 million in damages after a jury found that the college harassed and discriminated against her because of her race and religion, The Record reported on Thursday.

The professor, Althea Hylton-Lindsay, filed suit in 2013, saying she had been harassed after a new dean, Candace Burns, came to the university. A week after Ms. Hylton-Lindsay filed a complaint with the college, she was removed from her post as a department chair, said Steven Varano, her lawyer.

At another time, Ms. Burns called campus security on Ms. Hylton-Lindsay, a born-again Christian, after she prayed at a colleague’s desk, Mr. Varano said.

The jury, sitting in Paterson Superior Court, on Wednesday awarded Ms. Hylton-Lindsay $1 million for emotional distress, $195,000 in lost pay, and $1.2 million in compensatory damages.

According to the Associated Press, the college’s lawyer said Ms. Hylton-Lindsay had been demoted because she didn’t work well with Ms. Burns.
