Regent University, a private Christian institution in Virginia Beach, said on Wednesday that it planned to file a trademark-infringement lawsuit over the University System of Georgia’s recent decision to give the name “Georgia Regents University” to the institution being created by the merger of Augusta State and Georgia Health Sciences Universities. The Virginia college had earlier sent a letter to the Georgia system’s Board of Regents, asking it to avoid a name that could cause confusion. Many supporters of the Georgia colleges have also criticized the board’s choice, which came in a distant fourth when it appeared in surveys about proposed names. Students at Augusta State recently protested the new name on the first day of the fall semester, according to The Augusta Chronicle. The newspaper reported that the Virginia college’s announcement does not say when the lawsuit will be filed.
