Santa J. Ono, the University of Cincinnati’s president, has been named the next president of the University of British Columbia, it announced on Monday.
Mr. Ono will start a five-year term at the Canadian institution on August 15.
As president of the University of Cincinnati since 2012, Mr. Ono initially drew attention for his active presence on social media, with tens of thousands of followers on Twitter. He later led the university through a crisis that erupted after a white campus police officer shot to death an unarmed black motorist. Most recently, Mr. Ono opened up about his personal struggles with mental health and sparked a conversation about increased mental-health services on college campuses.
The University of British Columbia is no stranger to administrative shake-ups. In August 2015 a former president, Arvind Gupta, resigned abruptly. This past March faculty members voted no confidence in the university’s Board of Governors.
