Some 60 students at California universities were arrested late Monday after they refused to end a protest in the Rotunda of the state Capitol, in Sacramento, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The daylong protest, which featured a march and a rally, and which drew thousands of students, faculty members, and other college employees from across the state, was intended to highlight years of tuition increases and budget cuts for higher education, to push for more state support for public colleges, and to encourage passage of tax increases, on rich Californians and on oil extraction, that would provide more funds for public education. When the protest continued after the Capitol’s closing time, the police warned the protesters to disperse and, when they did not, arrested them. Most were charged with trespassing and resisting arrest.
