Small Texas College Will Give All Students Jobs to Reduce Their Tuition

A small, private college is set to join a sliver of American higher-education institutions that give all of their students jobs and, in exchange, reduce their tuition, The Texas Tribune reports. Paul Quinn College, a historically black college in Dallas, will give each of its roughly 300 students jobs at the institution or with local businesses.

To join the seven other American colleges that use the work-college model, Paul Quinn must operate that way for two years as part of standards set forth by the U.S. Department of Education.

“We have made a decision to function leanly in order to pass our savings onto our students,” Michael Sorrell, the college’s president, told the newspaper. “That’s just the right thing to do. It’s who we are, and that’s taking care of our family.”

The college gained attention a few years ago when, in response to nearly losing its accreditation, it decided to turn its football stadium into a garden, among other steps to stabilize its finances.
