Supreme Court Rejects Challenge to Federal Financing of Stem-Cell Research

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to review a lawsuit that had challenged the federal government’s financing of research on embryonic stem cells, leaving intact a lower court’s decision to dismiss the case. A pair of researchers had asserted in a 2009 lawsuit that new National Institutes of Health guidelines, put in place under President Obama, violated a 1996 federal law barring government spending on research harmful to human embryos. But a federal appeals court in August upheld a lower court’s decision to dismiss the case, and on Monday the Supreme Court also declined to review the case, according to Bloomberg News.
