Texas A&M University at College Station is examining allegations that several students yelled racial slurs at a group of touring high-school students this week, reports The Dallas Morning News.
The incident reportedly began when a white woman approached the black high-school students to ask their opinion of her Confederate-flag earrings. A group of students then began to berate the visitors with racial obscenities and told them to “go back where you came from.”
“I am outraged and tremendously disappointed in the behavior displayed by a group of students on our College Station campus,” said the university’s president, Michael K. Young, in a written statement. “I deeply regret the pain and hurt feelings this incident caused these young students. Be assured that we take such allegations very seriously.”
The incident occurred as the university tries to increase enrollment of black students, who made up only 3 percent of its undergraduates as of the fall of 2014. A&M ranks among the lowest in numbers of black undergraduates in the state, according to an analysis by the Morning News.
