[Updated (10/10/2016, 9:33 p.m.) with apology from Mr. Nalley.]
Lawton Nalley, an associate professor of agricultural economics and agribusiness at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, was arrested and charged with two misdemeanors on Saturday night, the Associated Press reports.
Mr. Nalley allegedly screamed obscenities at Bret Bielema, the Arkansas football coach, after the Razorbacks lost to Alabama, 49-30.
According to the website SEC Country, when yelling at Mr. Bielema, Mr. Nalley took issue with the coach’s record. The Razorbacks are winless against Southeastern Conference teams this season.
Mr. Nalley, who faces charges of disorderly conduct and public intoxication, was released from jail later on Saturday night. In a statement released Monday night, Mr. Nalley apologized to Mr. Bielema and said he had no excuses for his actions.
Lona Robertson, interim dean of the university’s Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food, and Life Sciences, said in a separate statement that Mr. Nalley’s actions had been “highly inappropriate.” But she said he’s a respected teacher.
Correction (10/10/2016, 5 p.m.): This post originally cited an incorrect score for the Razorbacks’ loss to Alabama. It was 49-30, not 39-20.
