Michael H. Schill, dean of the University of Chicago Law School, has been named the next president of the University of Oregon, The Register-Guard reports. An expert in housing law, Mr. Schill has taught at the University of Pennsylvania, New York University, and the University of California at Los Angeles, where he also served as dean.
Mr. Schill will succeed Michael R. Gottfredson, who resigned suddenly last year, saying he wanted to spend more time on research and with his family. His two-year tenure had been one of continuous tumult, featuring allegations that the university had mishandled an allegation of rape against three basketball players, the negotiation of a new faculty contract, and the creation of a new governing board. Scott Coltrane, the former provost, has served as interim president.
