U. of Cincinnati Police Chief Quits in Review of Fatal Shooting

The chief of the University of Cincinnati’s police force and a major in the department resigned on Friday as part of an outside review that was conducted following a fatal shooting last summer by an officer on the force, The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

The white officer’s shooting of Samuel DuBose, who was black, inflamed racial tensions over the actions of law enforcement and raised questions about the proper role of the university’s police department. The officer was charged with murder, and in January the university reached a $5.3-million settlement with the victim’s family.

The university hired a consulting firm to conduct a review of the police department. Jason Goodrich, the police chief, and Tim Thornton, a major in the department, resigned. Their departures signaled that the university was “looking toward the future of the department,” the administration said in a statement cited by the newspaper.
