U. of Louisville Board Accepts Ramsey’s Resignation as President

The University of Louisville’s Board of Trustees on Wednesday accepted President James R. Ramsey’s resignation, The Courier-Journal reported, after a series of scandals culminated in a wholesale shake-up of the institution’s governance.

Last month Kentucky’s governor, Matt Bevin, announced that Mr. Ramsey would resign and that all members of the board would be replaced with new members. After delaying its meeting on the matter by one day, the new board met in executive session until late Wednesday night before announcing Mr. Ramsey’s departure.

Under an agreement described by the board’s chairman, Mr. Ramsey will receive $690,000 and will resign immediately with a pledge not to sue the university.

Mr. Ramsey may stay on, however, as president of the University of Louisville Foundation, for which he was paid about $2.8 million in 2014 on top of his compensation as university president. The foundation is governed by a separate board, and The Courier-Journal reported that the university’s board does not have the authority to remove him as the foundation’s president.

Mr. Ramsey was credited with transforming the university from a commuter college into a residential campus, but his leadership was clouded by a range of scandals and controversy in recent months.
