U. of Louisville Says Employee Stole $463,000, Faults Lack of Monitoring

An audit released by the University of Louisville this week accuses a former employee of the university’s Equine Industry Program of taking more than $463,000 for personal use, The Courier-Journal reported. The former employee, Alisha Ward, was fired in March. She has not been charged with a crime, and the university has turned the case over to federal prosecutors. The audit says the suspicious activities it accuses Ms. Ward of should have been detected sooner, and the university’s president, James Ramsey, echoed that in a statement criticizing the lack of oversight. Louisville “has solid policies and procedures in place to prevent this kind of fraud,” he said, “if people will do their jobs and follow those policies and procedures.”
