Raymond W. Cross, president of the University of Wisconsin system, says he will resign if he can’t ward off a $300-million state budget cut and protect academic freedoms, the Wisconsin State Journal reports. Mr. Cross made the statement Wednesday to a group of employees and students at the system’s Milwaukee campus.
The university has been in a protracted budget battle with the state Legislature over a controversial proposal by Gov. Scott Walker to give the system more autonomy and, in exchange, cut about $300 million from it. The American Association of University Professors has come out against the plan, saying it would erode such basic principles as tenure, due process, and shared governance.
Legislators are wrangling over the details of the state budget.
