U.S. Senate Candidate Draws Fire for Past Designation as Minority Faculty at Harvard

The re-election campaign of U.S. Sen. Scott Brown, a Massachusetts Republican, has demanded that his Democratic opponent, Elizabeth Warren, apologize for letting Harvard University identify her as a Native American member of its law school’s faculty in the 1990s, The Boston Globe reports. The newspaper quoted Jim Barnett, the campaign manager for Senator Brown, as saying: “That Warren allowed Harvard to hold her up as an example of their commitment to diversity in the hiring of historically disadvantaged communities is an insult to all Americans who have suffered real discrimination and mistreatment, and Warren should apologize for participating in this hypocritical sham.” Ms. Warren was listed as a minority professor in law directories from 1986 through 1995, a period during which she also taught at the University of Texas and the University of Pennsylvania, and a Harvard spokesman identified her as Native American in 1996, the Globe said. Ms. Warren’s campaign has said she is proud of her Native American ancestry, has not used her minority status to gain an advantage in seeking jobs, and has no plans to apologize.
