U.S. to Investigate Swarthmore College’s Handling of Sex-Assault Complaints

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights will investigate a complaint against Swarthmore College alleging that the Pennsylvania institution violated Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 by failing to respond properly to complaints of sexual assault. Students and alumni at several other colleges have filed similar complaints as part of a movement that is gaining momentum on campuses around the country. On Monday a group of activists connected to that movement protested outside the department’s headquarters, in Washington, calling for tougher sanctions against colleges that mishandle reports of sexual assault.
