A Widener University committee has cleared Lawrence J. Connell, a tenured law professor, of most of the disciplinary charges that the institution had brought against him after two students accused him of racial and sexual harassment and reported him for making several hypothetical references, in classroom discussions, to the law-school dean’s being shot. The committee cleared Mr. Connell of the harassment charges, but did find him guilty of violating a policy against retaliation for making public statements, in an e-mail to students and through a press release issued by his lawyer, about the allegations leveled against him by his accusers. The university had earlier decided not to pursue complaints that Mr. Connell posed a danger to students. Mr. Connell has filed a lawsuit accusing the dean, Linda L. Ammons, of defamation, and has moved to have the students who complained about him also named as defendants.
