New, sophisticated cyber threats are making it more difficult to secure campus networks as campuses are increasingly reliant on these networks to function.

But defensive tools are outdated, and criminals’ AI-fueled tactics are increasingly nefarious. For example, as many professors’ voices are freely accessible through virtual courses and YouTube videos, AI can create deepfakes to dupe staff and students.

Institutions also face challenges educating users about protecting sensitive information when interacting with AI chatbots. As the attacks become more advanced, some institutions are developing custom, low-cost AI tools to detect threats.
