Helping Students Navigate the 'Hidden Curriculum'

There’s more to the completion of a degree than academics — and as more and more first-generation students make their way onto campus, colleges are recognizing that those students need more support outside the classroom, particularly when it comes to the “hidden curriculum.” How can colleges help first-gen students understand the intricate, often unwritten rules of college policies, procedures, and campus culture unfamiliar to their families?

We’ve assembled a panel of experts to examine the issue at a coming virtual forum, “Helping Students Navigate the ‘Hidden Curriculum.’” Join us as we discuss how colleges and universities are shifting priorities and developing strategies to help their students overcome those challenges and realize their full potential.

Host: Sarah Brown, news editor, The Chronicle of Higher Education

Colleges have been employing chatbots for a number of years to support student recruitment and enrollment. But as AI technology has advanced, the chatbots have advanced into AI agents. Simply put, a chatbot answers simple, pre-defined questions using scripted responses, while an AI agent is more advanced and can understand complex queries, learn from interactions, and potentially take proactive steps. Such tools, such as voice agents, are used frequently in corporate customer relations and campuses have quickly followed suit. But within the higher ed, how should these AI admissions agents ideally work? What parameters does a college need to set to make sure responses and actions are appropriate? What can colleges learn potentially from the business world about what works – what doesn’t? This forum, moderated by a Chronicle journalist, would explain what AI agents are, how they are benefiting admissions, and what the proper use of them should be.
