Diving Into Data to Improve Teaching
Incorporating data into education might help instructors better understand their classroom’s strengths and flaws.
Student data is currently being used by faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Morgan State University to surface gaps in student outcomes. These institutions are finding that they’re able to build more supportive and inclusive learning environments given data points like grade distribution and student performance across all courses. Practices implemented based on data include offering more culturally relevant assignments and reassigning an instructor to courses that best reflect their strengths.
While UNC’s data dashboard, My Course Analytics Dashboard (MCAD), is designed solely for instructor use, Morgan State also makes data available to students.
