About This Project

This content was created by The Chronicle‘s editorial team, supported by a grant from Ascendium.

Two decades ago, colleges became serious about student retention and graduation rates. Have they made any progress?

Many institutions have. They have student-success directors on campus. They opened student-success centers. They focused on empowering low-income and minority students.

In February, The Chronicle surveyed 874 administrators and faculty, and interviewed a dozen more, to find out what strategies are working and what gaps remain, including:

  • Institutional priorities and policies.
  • High-ROI programs.
  • New approaches to student advising.
  • Opportunities for more innovative thinking.
