Is this boot camp for minority STEM scholars hazing?
- The University of Maryland-Baltimore County’s Meyerhoff Scholars Program is nationally praised for its work to propel minority students into science, technology, and math fields. Alums include a surgeon general and a scientist who helped create a Covid vaccine. But a Chronicle investigation found the six-week summer boot camp that introduces students to the program raises questions about where the line is between being tough and hazing. - This student-led organization aims to create a safe space for Arab and Jewish students. The hard part is getting their peers to participate. The leaders of Atidna International, a student-led group that wants to foster understanding between Jewish and Arab students, say one of their biggest challenges is other students. Peer pressure, such as demands that students post their opinions on social media and the risk of being ostracized by others, has left students feeling torn and less willing to speak out.
