Subject: Your Career: A rough job market ahead for Ph.D.s

With hiring on hold in many sectors, what should graduate students, postdocs, and their universities be doing?

In the next few years, graduate students and postdocs will very likely face the worst job market in a generation, and many of them lack strategies and support to manage the tumult. Faculty hiring will almost certainly be at a near standstill in the next academic year. In other economic downturns — such as the Great Recession of 2008 or the Covid pandemic — graduate students could extend time in their programs or move into postdoc positions. The time when universities could leave master’s recipients and Ph.D.s to fend for themselves on the job market is over. Ensuring that your alumni leave their programs knowing how to build careers — commensurate with their advanced degrees — will be critical to the future of graduate education at your institution.

University of California, Berkeley chancellor Dr. Rich Lyons, testifies at a Congressional hearing on antisemitism, in Washington, D.C., U.S., on July 15, 2025. It is the latest in a series of House hearings on antisemitism at the university level, one that critics claim is a convenient way for Republicans to punish universities they consider too liberal or progressive, thereby undermining responses to hate speech and hate crimes.
